Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Why are you crying out to me? Tell the Israelites to move on.’
— Exodus 14:15
The Exodus represents one of the most significant moments of liberation in biblical history. It is the story of the Israelites leaving behind their life of slavery in Egypt and stepping into the unknown wilderness in search of freedom. But before they could reach the Promised Land, they had to make a choice: remain in the familiar suffering or set sail into the unknown, trusting in something greater.
This mirrors our own journeys of change. Often, we become stuck in old patterns, bound by the familiarity of habits, even when they no longer serve us. We long for liberation but hesitate to move forward, held back by fear of the unknown. In Jungian terms, this represents a reluctance to step into the process of individuation — the journey toward wholeness — because it requires us to leave behind the safe structures of the past.
The painting Christopher Columbus in the Convent of La Rábida by Sir David Wilkie (1834) captures this moment of visionary resolve. Like Columbus preparing for his voyage, we too must have the courage to leave the shores of the known, trusting that beyond the horizon lies our personal Promised Land.
If nothing changes, nothing changes. Nothing changes if I don't change.
Just as the Israelites had to walk through the parted waters, we must step forward in faith, trusting that the path to liberation comes through breaking the patterns that have kept us in bondage. In this Lenten season, consider where you are being called to let go of old patterns and embrace the unknown. What must you leave behind to move toward true freedom?
Journaling Prompt: What familiar patterns or habits are holding you back from growth? How can you set sail toward new possibilities, trusting the process of change?
